Announcing Credo Reference as a new a multidisciplinary collection of online reference resources. Funded by USF Sarasota/Manatee, the content in Credo is selected by USF librarians.
Credo Reference provides access to one hundred reference resources, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and biographical sources chosen to meet a broad range of research needs. Metasearching allows the user to search across all content in the current collection. Each title has an information title page with a description, and a search box for the individual title, so searching can be done at a more precise level. Concept maps are available, as are “gadgets” offering quick look ups for definitions, locations, conversions, quotations and people. Results can be exported into RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager. Users can also email the abstract or the full-text, save to a file or clipboard, or choose to print. Citation styles offered are APA, MLA, Harvard and Chicago.

As our Children’s Books collection expanded, the stack where they reside was getting too crowded. We reshelved the last part of the collection (mainly fairytales and nonfiction/science books) on the back of that stack, thus the need to around the corner to find them.
As always, don’t hesitate to ask if you can’t find what you are looking for.

Hello everyone. I have returned from my self proclaimed “vacation”. For those of you that were not aware of what I have been up to. I took two weeks off from work, one week unpaid as I did not have any more vacation. My trip took me through many states and some very beautiful country. [...]

We are currently experiencing difficulties with our NetLibrary e-book collection. We are seeing a copyright message appear every 4-5 pages and we are getting reports that users are getting bumped out of NetLibrary with the message: “This eContent is not included in your library’s collection and is unavailable for viewing.”
To fix the copyright message issues, NetLibrary has scheduled a fix for which they have to bring down all of their servers on Friday, November 6th, to make the fix. They are also working on the other problem.
NetLibrary is the USF Libraries’ biggest e-book collection.

Our apologies! Here are the items newly arrived at the USF Polytechnic Library during the month of September and October. Yes, we inadvertently skipped a month in the flurry of activity in the Library. So this list will combine items receive during both.
As always, new circulating books and children’s books are found in the “New books” stacks in the Group Study area and can be checked out; the new reference, DVD titles and Special Collection items are immediately being shelved in their respective stacks.
Of particular interest are our first print issues of Psychology Today as well as the volume RoboCup 2008 : Robot Soccer World Cup XII co-edited by faculty member Dr. Alfredo Weitzenfeld. Finally, we receive the latest editions of the Florida teacher certification examinations test self-study guides. They’re in their own section in this list.

The American Psychological Association released last week dozens of corrections to the brand new 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The first printing of the Manual was published in July. A very popular citation style, the Manual is used in psychology, as well as in education, sociology, economics, business, nursing and justice administration, among other fields.
The USF Poly Library has the first printing of the 6th edition. Waiting to see how and when we will obtain a copy of the second printing, a printout of the corrections are with the copy we own presently (Reference BF76.7 .P83 2010) (as you can imagine, some are calling to the APA to send free replacements). The link to the corrections is also listed below. We are also listing four new sample papers (not printed out):

President Obama has proclaimed this month “Information Literacy Awareness Month”.
Information literacy can be defined, as in the proclamation, “the ability to seek, find, and decipher information [that] can be applied to countless life decisions, whether financial, medical, educational, or technical.”
Libraries and librarians are actively involved in information literacy and the USF Poly Library is no exception. We are available to help students either individually or in a class setting.

On September 23 we sent out a round of email stating that courses created in 2004 and earlier would be removed from the system in 30 days. The message read as follows:
Professor @@lname,
We apologize for the blast of emails today. We are cleaning out 4 semesters of old courses,
and our tool only lets us do it one semester at a time.
In order to allocate myUSF storage resources more effectively, course
sites created in @@semester will be permanently removed from
the system. This procedure is necessary to allow for the increased
use of Blackboard within our institution.
If you wish to retain a copy of the content of the course sites
identified below, please create your own export package(s) before

There are a number of options available for preservation of your course content:
- Export just the Gradebook in a Comma Separated format.
- Export the entire course.

Since the deployment of Blackboard, IT has maintained that we would try to maintain 5 years of course sites on Blackboard as long as it was technically feasible.
2009 was a busy year for IT, and we were lax in keeping up with the course cleanups. Thus we had courses as far back as Fall 2003 on the system, 4 full semesters of courses that needed removal. We had two options for cleaning courses, (1) Stager the emails and stretch the course removal over several months, or (2) Send a bunch of emails and do all the cleanup at once. We decided option 2 was the least disruptive to faculty, hence the blast of email yesterday.
As stated in the email, there are two options for maintaining a personal archive of your old course content.
1) Export just the grades [How do I do this?]
2) Export the entire course and all it’s contents. [How do I do this?]
As a side note, we are working on two projects.
The first is a utility that will allow faculty to request development course sites. These courses would have a very long expiration date, so that faculty can build up their courses in these development sites, and copy from the development site into their actual course at the start of each semester.
In the past we had not allowed for such courses precisely because they didn’t expire, and were outside out direct control. However 10 years of running Blackboard has shown that this restriction has side effects we didn’t predict, such as the impact of that volume of course data on Blackboard.
The second project: IT is working with the Courseware Steering Committee, CTIR, and faculty groups around campus to redefine the course retention policy to shorten it from 5 years online to something much more reasonable like 1-2 years online. 98% of courses are not accessed by instructors after the first year, and 99.44% are not accessed after the second year. Additionally, the single biggest reason to access the old course sites is to make changes and copy them into the new course sites at the start of each semester.
Removing courses more frequently would make the Blackboard system more responsive for users, easier to backup, and faster to upgrade. Faster, safer, more reliable. What’s not to love?
The availability of development course sites removes the single biggest reason to keep courses for more than a year. With a handful of development sites, we can reduce the number of long term, development oriented sites from 80000 down to about 6000. That’s an order of magnitude reduction.
With luck we’ll have all of this implemented in time for our upgrade to Blackboard 9 in December. We’ll be ready to start the new decade leaner, meaner, and ready to learn.
Tue 22 Sep 2009
The Blackboard system experienced an operating system kernel error on one server which cascaded and was not handled properly by the cluster, resulting in Blackboard being unavailable for about 45 minutes, Tuesday, September 22, from approximately 9:30-10:15pm. No data was lost as a result of this outage.
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

This morning, in The Ledger newspaper, an article was published on the Library’s Read Out event on September 29th. During the event, we will be reading passages from banned or challenged books out loud.
We invite everyone on campus to participate in listening or reading (still good spots available). Please contact the librarian, Catherine Lavallée-Welch, if you’re interested in reading (863-667-7737; clw@poly.usf.edu).

AdViews is a digital archive of thousands of vintage television commercials dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. The collection is made accessible online by the Duke University Special Collections Library.
These commercials were created or collected by the ad agency Benton & Bowles or its successor, D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles (DMB&B). Founded in 1929, Benton & Bowles was a New York advertising agency that merged with D’Arcy Masius McManus in 1985 to form DMB&B. Major clients included are Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Schick, Vicks, and Post, among others. They are available on iTunes U or via the Library’s AdViews website.
