I love typography site has a simple design with a white background and black lettering. It is easy to navigate and has an extensive list of articles about typography.
Typographica is another site with a simple design. The site displays many different fonts that are very unique.
Microsoft Typography is an excellent source of information with the history and development of typographics, links, articles, events and free tools. The variation of color in the banner is interesting.
ABC Typography allows the user the select different types of fonts which gives multiple examples and a history of that font. The different categories in the navigation bar matches the pages in color.
Alistapart: Typography has a simple design and extensive list of articles about code, content, culture, design and user science.
Typographic is divided nicely into categories like evolution, timeline, anatomy, glossary and a bibliography with book and web resources.
Design Snips has a great logo and another simple layout. The site also give an extensive list of design elements with excellent examples. Lots of really advanced designs.
All these site have a very simple but well laid out designs. They highlight the content and not fancy design.

Pricinples of Beautiful Web Design chapter 5 is about imagery. Photographs and illustration act to draw in the user and help them move around the site. It makes the site look more appealing. Photographs can be taken by the site’s creator, obtained from stock photographic sites or purchased from a professional photographer. Photoshop can be used to enhance the look of the photograph by cropping it and adjusting the color.
Chapter 13 in Creating Web Sites talks about how web sites can make money. Instead of creating the physical store, an e-commerce site can be a cheaper alternative. The visitors can view the site products and then purchases whatever they like. Selling products is the best way to make money on the web but sites can also take donations, show advertisements or take part in a affiliate program which refers users to other sites for a commission. Google and Amazon both have affiliated programs for users.
Chapter 14 discusses JavaScript and DHTML. JavaScript enhances HTML pages with all its interactive features. It works well for pop-up windows, marquee style scrolling text and buttons that light up. Google and Amazon use server-side applications. The advanced software that powers these giants search massive databases for the users requested information. Client-side application are less powerful programs that work within normal HTML. Dymanic HTML writes code and controls the look and location of all the HTML elements.

Well it’s the half way mark and I really miss Cale. He has called me at least once everyday, which makes my day here a little better, but it still sucks. I can’t wait to see him. Nine more days! So this whole week I have been working at school for the last rental of the [...]

Creating Web Designs-

Chapter 13: This chapter is about making money with your site. I like this idea but your site has to be useful and appeal to many people in order to make a profit. However, it is important for the user to be able to safely and securely make purchases online. Also, it is important to know that advertisement is another way for you to make money. Companies will pay you for advertisement space if you have a popular and successful website that receives many visitors. One girl is a multi millionaire for creating My Space web layouts. Companies have paid her to advertise on her website.

Chapter 14: JavaScript and DHTML is a chapter that is very difficult for me to understand. After reading this chapter, I do realize that JavaScript enhances HTML.

The Principles of Web Design-

Chapter 5: This chapter deals with Imagery. The use of imagery is important when creating a successful web page. This chapter discusses how to appopriately use your images and the importance of cropping, adjustments and how to add borders and using multiple effects. This topic to me will be more useful for advanced web developers.

Between approximately 7am and 9am, Friday June 27, Blackboard errors were seen when any of the following actions were performed:

  • Post a message to a discussion board
  • Take a test
  • Upload an assignment

On Friday, June 27 During the scheduled maintenance window, a fix was applied to correct a minor performance problem. During the application of this fix, one of the temp space locations on the database server filled to capacity. During the act of cleaning up the temp space, Blackboard as unable to write to the temp space, which caused errors in a number of places.

The errors began around 7am. Normal operations were restored by 9am. No data was lost as a result of this interruption.

Firefox 3 was released Tuesday June 17th. For the most part, Firefox 3 is compatible with myUSF Blackboard, but we have identified at least one significant area in which Firefox 3 fails.

When trying to upload an attachment to an assignment with Firefox 3, we get an error. A javascript popup displays “please enter a valid file” although the file is valid. This issue is being addressed in a service pack for version 7.3, but that has not been released yet. We will evaluate the service pack once it becomes available.

In the meanwhile, we recommend that you do not upgrade to Firefox 3 if you have need to upload files to Blackboard. Please remain on Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 6 or 7, or Safari 2. These are the only web browsers currently certified and supported by Blackboard.

I spend three hours trying to add a RSS news feed to my home page. I tried lots of types but few worked well enough even to consider. I don’t know if I’ll mess with this further but I do want something dynamic on the main page.

The text chapters on Google Adsense and Amazon Associates was a big help to me. I have used eBay/Paypal before and it was not difficult. Both Google and Amazon are good ways to help fund a site and if the content is valuable it will drive more folks to your site.

Okay…
This was mentioned at orientation so I’m trying it out.
Hi. I’m Kat and I’m starting USF this summer.
I’m really nervous and I suck at making friends <3
So please be nice to me ….

I work for Student Government now as the Assistant Comptroller of Travel. It’s a good job and I enjoy it, although it’s a bit complex. More details to come.

Ones I liked;

15 Examples of Excellent Web Typography - This was good in that there was something specific and limited in scope.

Microsoft Typography - Nice clean site. Even though it MS, you ot to keep on top of what they are up to. the Web imbedded fontstool looked interesting.

ABC Typography - Who would not like this site. I got lost in the descriptions of the historical type faces.

A List Apart: Typography - Nice blog format. I found the CSS Ten Year report interesting.

TypoGraphic - I love time lines, they are a great visual concept tool. I also liked how the menus were done at the bottom of each page.

Digital Magazine - Another clean site. Reading it made me think of how the Web and CSS are taking font creation from a printing industry trade secret to a populist art form.

Noupe.com: CSS Tutorials - Seeing this again made me think that even though MicroSoft is the leader in browser installations they are also they leader in web design bugs. I’m liking MS less every day.

DesignSnips - Different focus here in they mention snips of various sites that they like. Shows how there is so much variety on the Internet and so many ways of looking at the pages.

Ones I did not like;

NONE!

Neutral;

I Love Typography - Obviously a great resource of fonts and news but the layout I found “busy”.

Typographica - Would not open.

Turns out I think my flash drive is going buggy. I can get to Dr. Simon’s page without the error if the flash drive is not installed. Time to get another one.

This project was fairly straight forward. I learned a few new things: like how to imbed a hyperlink in text and how to add sound to my slides. I also learned how to create a more custom background for my slides. This helped me make each slide an individual that will stand alone and reflect the content of each book talk. This project has also allowed me to perfect my plan for the website that I am creating for Instructional Graphics. I was concerned about copyright issues with book jackets. I decided to recreate elments of each book jacket in the slide using my own visuals and color schemes. My presentation is meant to aid teachers who are participating in the Battle of the Books this year. The Teens Read list is the focus of the competition. There are 15 books on the list and the kids will be able to choose a few of them. This presentation will give the teachers an opportunity to perform their own book talks at their convenience.

Urban Dirty had a black background with white lettering. This is very dramatic! It had a simple navigation bar that enables the user to view free textured photos of surfaces. An extensive collections of photos. This site linked to Grunge Texture. This site has a great color scheme. It fits well with the site. It is neat how the content part of the site is on what appears to be a piece of paper. Though it’s nicely set-up, Texture King was more commercial looking than the other texture sites. It sells shirts to advertize the site. Deviant Art Textures has a pleasing gray scheme which in a way does not match the dramtic mature of the vast photo collection. Best Texture Flickr Group has a very simple layout with an all white background and blue and pink lettering. The site is filled with incredible photos. Photoshop Tutorial on Creating Textures has a dark brown background a tan colored background for the content area and red and black lettering. The site contains blog designs in various categories. 2007 Web Design Trends has numerous examples of web sites with incredible texture. Some example are minimal design and dark backgrounds.

Chapter 4 in Principles of Beautiful Web Design discusses typography or communication. The site communicates with its users through the use of type or lettering. This means fonts. Much like color, fonts can convey different moods and meanings. Certain fonts go with certain sites. Some fonts are formal and some are not. Some fonts are safe to use and are compatible with various systems, and they are Arial, Arial Black, Comic Sans, Courier New, Georgia, Impact, Times New Roman and Verdana. Anatomy of type describes how letters are place on an imaginery line that we write on. This can be typed or handwritten. Letters made into word can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically to enhance readablity.
Creating Web Sites chapter 11 talks about attacking visitors. The site must be completed first before the creator should start looking for visitors. The creator needs to look for similar or related sites and start up reciprocal link agreement. The site should be connected to internet directories and search engines. To keep visitor coming back, the site should be updated regular and this means weekly or monthly. It is also important to know who’s visiting your site.
Chapter 12 talks about how a site’s visitors can talk to the site/creator and each other. Through discussion boards and chat rooms, visitors can communication their feelings. Updates should be communicated before after any changes are made. Visitor email, forums and groups are all vital links to the site. Feedback from users is an important tool.

This video of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor speaking is absolutely amazing. [BTW all of the TED talks are great]

I appreciate her honest emotion so much, particularly b/c it helps me understand my best friend Sarah’s recent stroke [chronicled here on NOLA.com] and once again feel completely optimistic that she will recover 100%!

In adding a link to Dr. Simon’s website I noticed an error box pops up. Seems to happen no matter what direction you are comming from. I snagged a picture of it and forwarded it in an email in case it is something with the USF side.

All of the following websites can be useful in some way when learning about using texture in web page development. These sites gave me some ideas for my web page. Furthermore, I found the Vandelay Design website ( http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/design/photoshop-tutorials-textures/) the most informational and useful out of all the sites. This site has 40 photoshop tutorials in order to create excellent textures and backgrounds.

Creating Web Sites-

Chapter 11: This chapter is on attracting visitors. Its important for a developer to know how to promote their site in order to get visitors. The process is pretty simple to me. First, you need an appealing site that is attractive, then you need to spread the word about your site. Next, you should submit your site to an internet directory and then to a search engine. Now I left out the most important step, which is to have a great meta tag, which are hidden tags that tells about your website. These tags gives key words that will allow the search engine to find your web site. As a user, I hate searching for sites and find nothing but junk. Finally, a developer can actually track the number of visitors in order to see if they have an successful site.

Chapter 12: This chapter is about letting visitors talk to you and each other. This site is about transforming a website into a community. it is important for the purpose of a site to have a clearly defined purpose. Also, dveloper can allow their users to email them or even create an online chat. This makes the web site more user friendly and will probably make the user visit the site more often especially if it concerns business transactions.

The Principles of Web Design:

Chapter 4: This chapter covers the topic of typography. The typography to me is the most important part of the web page because it communicates the purpose of the site. The type and font should be an appropriate size in order to maintain the integrity of the web page. A cluttered site will distract a user and make them quickly leave a site. Therefore, it is very important to chose your font and style carefully.

My web project is moving forward as I create content for the pages. Not having much trouble now that I have templates made for the main page and the sub-pages.

I still have lots of work left but it is starting to look like a “Web Site”.

I dropped off Cale, and Nuri, at the Orlando airport yesterday afternoon so he could fly to Norway and Europe for 18 days. Cale was feeling sick a few days before and took some medicine to try to get rid of it. I don’t think it worked all that well because when I was driving [...]

I have been having serious issues with building a web page. I know that we do not have to code everything by hand, but I am still struggling. Komposer lost me. I have been using front page, and I find it more usuer friendly. I know that it is not the best, but right now I understand it the best. I hope that my understanding begins to increase because nothing is clicking right now. This gets more difficult with the more information that I have. I thought that the problem was not enough information. I stopped working and started reading. This has only created more problems with all of the jargon bouncing around in my head. I am very frustrated in that I no longer know where to begin. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michele

A few days after my last post, I sort of lost my job. I still have one, but they moved me back to the classroom. I let many things that happened over the course of a few days get to me. I gave in to the mild depression and my class work suffered. I am currently trying to get back on track (playing catch up). I cannot believe that I gave in to everything that is happening. I do not usually do that, but I was weak this time. I am very diappointed, and I will really miss my job as a media specialist. I am trying not to think about next year right now. I have to take this one day at a time so that I can graduate on time in December. I apologize for neglecting class and the discussion boards. I am a horrible blogger. Talk about gaps between posts! I have really dropped the ball this semester.

In looking into current use of textures and backgrounds I found a lot of inspiration for other sites I may do in the future. The urban and grunge styles were very interesting in use of color, texture, and balance.

My web project is proceeding better now that I settled on a visual theme. Now I am beginning to work on content, links, and subpages. One hassle is that notepad has no spell checking and if I open an HTML file in Word, it goofs it all up. So I made a temp.txt file to creat paragraphs. Then I can open the txt file in Word, run the spell checker, and it does not modify the text other than corrections.
