Elluminate Upgrade to Version 9.1!
Posted at Elluminate Blog @ USF under elluminate , elluminate moderators , elluminate participants , infoElluminate recently released a new version of Elluminate (version 9.1). Currently we are using Elluminate 8.5. Elluminate 9.1 has several new features and we are now going to upgrade our servers to Elluminate 9.1 on May 18, 2009. This upgrade will not affect your existing sessions, session links, Elluminate moderators login url, Blackboard integration, user records, and past recordings. The user interface will also remain the same with a few additional buttons and menu items that refer to the new features.
The only change you will notice is that when you and your students log in to a session after we have completed the upgrade, you will experience an increase in the time taken to download the software for Elluminate. This should not take long. However, if your students will be connecting by dial-up (slower Internet connection), they should be advised to log in early for the first session after the upgrade. Also, after the Elluminate session window opens you will notice a few interface changes which are mostly aesthetic. Some major changes include:
Multipoint Video
- Up to six people can now share their web cam simultaneously (if they have webcams connected while in the Elluminate session).
- Moderators can configure this in the session from Tools > Video > Maximum Simultaneous Cameras…
- Moderators can control the view of the main window and allow users to set their own view.

In-Session Invitations
- Moderators can invite others into an in-progress session from within the Elluminate Live! interface.
- A new button is available on the toolbar allowing instant email composition or link copy to clipboard for use in IM or other applications.
Chat
- A new icon in the Chat window provides an indicator to all attendees that moderators can view private chat messages.
Synchronized Notes
- With the intention of increasing accessibility, the synchronized notes window allows users to configure the text font size.
To learn more about the features in Elluminate 9 and for great moderator training in Elluminate 9, consider attending our workshops on Elluminate in the Fall and Spring semesters.
Go to http://www.cte.usf.edu/workshops/#synchronouselluminate to register for the workshop when the new schedule is posted (usually at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters). More details on the workshop are listed on the site.

Elluminate Problems with Safari 4 and Safari 4 Beta on the Mac
Posted at Elluminate Blog @ USF under elluminate , elluminate moderators , elluminate participants , troubleshootingThere have been reports of Safari 4 Beta causing problems with Elluminate Live!. It has been determined that merely having it installed will cause Elluminate Live! to not operate as expected. Elluminate recommends using our software with supported applications that have passed our testing procedures. As Safari 4 was just released, we recommend the following steps:
- Uninstall Safari 4 Beta. Uninstalling the full release of Safari 4 is difficult and not recommended.
- Continue to use Safari 4, Beta or full release, but re-order your Java versions. By doing so you can place the most recent copy at the top and therefore make it default. Please Note – This option should only be used if you are using Elluminate Live! V9.1 or higher as older versions have demonstrated other problems as indicated here. Please click here to review our knowledge base article on this issue and additional information on re-ordering your Java versions.
We will be upgrading Elluminate to version 9.1 over this weekend (from version 8.5). This version has significant improvements and concrete solutions to the Safari 4 issue.

New database: American Periodicals Series
Posted at USF Polytechnic Library under Databases , New resources , Arts & SciencesTo further scholarship in many disciplines, the USF Libraries recently purchased the online version of the American Periodicals Series.
American Periodicals Series Online features over 1,100 periodicals spanning nearly 200 years from colonial times to the advent of American involvement in World War II. Containing more than seven million digitized page images, titles range from America’s first scientific journal to popular magazines.
The publications in this collection cover three broad periods:
- The years between 1740 and 1800 that offer insight in America’s transition from a British colony to an independent nation with eighty-nine published journals;
- The first sixty years of the nineteenth century that showcase the golden age of American periodicals where most great literary works of the nineteenth century appeared in a magazine with more than nine hundred titles; and
- The Civil War (1861-1865) and Reconstruction (1865-1877) period that reflect the nation in turmoil and growth, the settling of the West, and the emergence of modern America with more than nine hundred titles.
Because the database contains digitized images of periodical pages, researchers can see all of the original typography, drawings, graphic elements, and article layouts exactly as they were originally published. American Periodical Series may prove useful in the following disciplines: history, arts, social sciences, humanities, statistics, medicine, sciences, and government and international affairs.

GLBT list of resources
Posted at USF Polytechnic Library under Databases , Instructors , New resources , Students , StaffJune is GLBT Pride month. We have published our USFP Library 2009 list of resources listing books, children’s books, electronic journals and databases.
Thu 4 Jun 2009
On June 3, between 5-7pm MyUSF experienced a hardware failure which effected the performance and availability for some users until around 11pm. The hardware problem has also caused course content from Spring 2009 and Content Collection items to become unavailable. Current Summer 2009 content should not have been affected.
The nature of the failure forced us to switch to our disaster backup system. Content uploaded to the Content Collection between 5-7pm on June 3 of the failure may have been lost and will need to be uploaded again. Contents, Asisgnments, Exams, anything uploaded directly to Summer 2009 courses should not have been affected.
When the hardware issue is resolve we will make plans to switch back to the main server cluster.
Please follow this article for updates to this evolving situation.

As always, new circulating books are found in the “New books” stacks in the Group Study area; the new reference titles are being immediately shelved in their respective stacks.
Of note, we have continued receiving the 2008 award-winning Children’s Books as well as a few books from donations, notably from Dr. Preston Mercer. Thank you!
